Ryan Putnam is a designer, illustrator, potter, and father with an incredible eye for everyday characters. His website is dappled with playful portraits, and our favorites: the “xoxo miss you” ode to Obama, the faces of Tobias Funke, and Walter White. We haven’t overlooked his ceramics.

His Instagram feed is a series of hung (read: taped up) prints, every week a different study in muted primary paints and beautiful textures: pottery, plants, the human hand, geometric abstractions. In fact, Ryan’s page is a work of art itself with comic panels embedded across a series of posts to products images of his ceramic creations, to logos, those prints we love so much, and more. Ryan’s shop is clean, simple, and a joy to browse through. It’s as artfully organized as one would expect from a skilled designer.

And if that weren’t enough, you can learn directly from Ryan on SkillShare. Haven't you always wanted a personal avatar or emojis to share with your friends and spruce your online presence? Let Ryan walk you through his own process creating a personal avatar, using his own face as the example. Whether you're a designer looking to push yourself or an amateur who wants to create a fun avatar for your social media account, his class certainly inspire you. Just look at what more than 200 of his students have created. Isn't it impressive? There's more where that came from.
