Gabrielle Flank is the co-founder of the Frosting Company and a childhood cancer survivor. In fact, it’s her very struggle with cancer which inspired the foundation of her joint venture with sister, Brittney.
Having endured over two and half years of chemotherapy treatments, Gabrielle became intimately aware of the harmful chemicals inherent in her favorite popular beauty products. Cancer patients often struggle with hair loss, brittle nails, and extremely dry and sensitive skin in response to the body’s sudden influx of chemical treatment. As a result, the number of beauty products available to patients is slim to none.
“The Frosting Company is much more than just a business to us,” says Gabrielle. “It’s a platform to educate others about the importance of natural bath and beauty products.”
For the sisters, the key is to find products that use all-natural rather than organic ingredients. The word, organic describes the origin of a chemical rather than referring to safety. For instance, essential oils notoriously rely on organic preservatives which contain allergens and skin irritants.
Another good rule of thumb is to go with the least number of ingredients. The fewer the ingredients, the easier it is for your skin to digest and absorb. Your skin is your largest organ and a large percent of what you put on it is absorbed directly into your bloodstream,” reminds Gabrielle.
With their passion and love for natural products, the girls decided to create their own line of artisan products free of gluten, parabens, sulfates, phthalates and artificial preservatives and manufactured according to fair trade practices. Plus, you can also donate directly to the St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital directly on their site. "One thing that has always been important to us is giving back and making sure we are able to positively impact others,” says Brittney.
The sisters are always looking for ways they can help others, whether by bringing a smile to someone’s face, or a posting a positive and uplifting message on Instagram, or making surprise rounds in the hospital. What’s more, they’re not alone.
